Chandrayaan 3 Progresses Towards the Moon: Unravelling the Roles of Vikram Lander and Pragyan Rover

India's ambitious Chandrayaan 3-moon mission was launched from Earth on July 14. On August 23, it is anticipated to touch down on the moon.

On Tuesday, the well-known lunar mission Chandrayaan-3 of the Indian Space Research Organization finished its orbits of the Earth and advanced toward the Moon. The mission's goal is to make a soft landing on the lunar surface as a follow-up to Chandrayaan-2, a 2019 project that failed to make the anticipated soft landing.

The purpose of the spacecraft, according to the ISRO, is to "develop and demonstrate new technologies required for interplanetary missions." The spacecraft is made up of an indigenous propulsion module, a lander module, and a rover. 

The lander module must be carried from the launch vehicle's injection orbit until the lander separates, and that is what the propulsion system is meant to do. Carrying Lander Module and Rover up to 100 km of lunar orbit, according to ISRO, was the mission's goal. After then, the experimental payload will be in operation for 3 to 6 months. Being used as a communication hub, the propulsion module will stay in the Moon's orbit.

Role of Vikram Lander to watch:

The designations of the lander and rover are derived from Chandrayaan-2, the most recent expedition. The lander bears Dr. Vikram A. Sarabhai's name, who founded the Indian space program. It is equipped with a multitude of sensors to ensure a secure touchdown and is built to last for one lunar day, which is equivalent to 14 days on Earth. It has a total weight of around 1,749 kg with the rover. It is designed to have side-mounted solar panels that have a 738 W power output and will be used for lunar south pole exploration.

According to the ISRO, the Vikram lander has three payloads to accomplish its goals. RAMBHA-LP, which will gauge the density of the near-surface plasma (ions and electrons) and how it varies over time; ChaSTE, short for Chandra's Surface Thermophysical Experiment, will measure the thermal characteristics of the lunar surface close to the poles, and ILSA, short for Instrument for Lunar Seismic Activity, will measure seismicity near the landing site and map the composition of the lunar crust and mantle.

Role of Pragyan Rover: 

Pragyan is the Sanskrit word for wisdom and the name of the robotic vehicle. The six-wheeled vehicle is equipped with payload-configured devices that can collect information about the Moon's surface. Data on the atomic makeup of the atmosphere will be collected. It has a 26-kilogram weight and a one-lunar-day mission life, just like the lander.

The APXS, or "Alpha Particle X-Ray Spectrometer," is one of the two payloads on the rover and is designed to determine the elemental composition of the lunar surface. The LIBS, or "Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscope," will conduct experiments to ascertain the elemental composition of chemicals such as magnesium and aluminum, etc., of lunar soil and rocks near the lunar landing site.
